Freight rail transportation has been targeted by BART under an alternative proposal to its plan to add passenger rail service to the Bay Area's subway and commuter rail systems.
The Santa Fe Railway, a rail company that has long shipped freight from the Bay Area to Los Angeles, Fresno, Sacramento and points further south, would operate a rail line along the Bay Bridge that would link San Francisco to Daly City in San Mateo County.
The route, which would serve San Francisco International Airport and the Pacific City waterfront, has long been envisioned as a freight route but has never been pursued.
Freight companies have said that they would be happy to support the proposal to make the freight route a passenger line, and Mayor Gavin Newsom has pledged his support.
The idea has been floating around for years, but gained momentum with the Obama administration, which proposed it as a way to link California's mass transit systems with the Midwest and West Coast.
Santa Fe Railway officials say that it would be far cheaper for their company to expand its freight services than to build and operate a passenger line. But they say that they've never given up on the idea.
In a meeting with the San Francisco Bay Area Regional Transit Authority last month, Santa Fe officials said that they would be happy to consider the proposal and would cooperate with the city of San Francisco in providing a street-level route that would serve as a freight line.
